Good governance at ANZCA

Recent governance challenges at other medical colleges have highlighted the importance of good governance and the need to regularly review our governing documents to ensure they remain clear, modern and fit for purpose. Good governance has also been identified as an important strategic priority for the college.

Following ongoing discussions by ANZCA Council, a proposed incremental review of the college’s governance and constitution was endorsed at its meeting last week to ensure the college remains agile, transparent, inclusive and committed to member engagement.

With a new leadership team at ANZCA, including a new president, vice president, FPM dean, FPM vice dean and CEO, the college believes the time is right to review how it is governed. 

The review will examine incremental opportunities to enhance the structure and effectiveness of college committees, while also responding to evolving governance expectations from regulators and government agencies in relation to charities and medical colleges. 

We expect to propose constitutional amendments to implement the outcomes of these deliberations. Fellows, trainees and specialist international medical graduates (SIMGs) will be involved with this work.

What to expect

Consultation with fellows, trainees and SIMGs will be an important part of this review. Between now and the ANZCA Annual General Meeting in May 2027 we will be engaging via targeted surveys, focus groups and requests for submissions.

The review will be supported by expert advice, inclusive of legal, communications and regulatory expertise. A refreshed approach to governance will strengthen strategic oversight, clarify roles between governance and operations, and embed forward-looking, data-informed decision-making.
