FPM SA March Evening Meeting
The first FPM CME held in SA took place on 2 March and was an enlightening evening focused on Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) looking at the safe, non-invasive technique that can modulate pain processing within the brain and has the potential to play a significant role in chronic pain services.
The session was presented by Dr Gopika Asokan, Psychiatrist from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Pain Management Unit and attended in person by specialist pain medicine physicians, trainees and allied health professionals.
The CME event provided a valuable opportunity to formally acknowledge and thank SA/NT FPM Regional Committee members Dr Tim Semple and Dr Graham Wright, who concluded their tenure on the committee after more than 12 years of dedicated service. Both were members of the interim committee in 2011.
Dr Semple had earlier served as the ANZCA New Fellow Representative in the 1990s, demonstrating his longstanding commitment to the college. Dr Wright also completed a significant term as Chair on the FPM Regional Committee.
We sincerely thank them for their substantial and ongoing contributions to the faculty and the college.
SA/NT Part 1 and Part 2 long courses
The Part 1 and Part 2 exam preparation courses have commenced for the year. Part 1 has an especially large cohort of new trainees following the move to a single annual intake (previously two) for the SA/NT Rotational Anaesthetic Training Scheme (SANTRATS).
Introduction to Anaesthesia
The IAT was held on 21 February, providing several new trainees with valuable insight into all aspects of anaesthesia training, including the MyPortfolio system, welfare support, exams, and navigating challenges when things don’t go to plan. We were also fortunate to also have ASA President, Vida Viliunas, join us in person for the day. Thank you to trainee committee member, Sam Paull, for convening the session, and to all our consultant presenters who generously volunteer their time to support trainees.

Regional Education Subcommittee
The Regional Education Subcommittee (SOTs and course convenors) commenced its first meeting with an insightful and interactive introductory session delivered by Dr Marion Andrew on the Process Communication Model (PCM). The session supported professional communication and personal wellbeing, introducing a structured model that offers insight into how individuals communicate and behave in both routine and high-stress healthcare environments.
