Safety and Quality Update - March
New this month: ACSQHC National Guidelines for e-discharge summaries; TG partnership with AdPha; UK perioperative care study; webAIRS update
National Guidelines for Presentation of Electronic Discharge Summaries
The ACSQHC has revised its National Guidelines for Presentation of Electronic Discharge Summaries.
New Therapeutic Guidelines (TG) partnership with Advanced Pharmacy Australia (AdPha)
The new strategic partnership will provide access to clinical resources developed by AdPha through the TG platform. The first two resources to be published in March are:
- ObesiD – a new, Australian-first resource to support safe and evidence-informed dosing decisions for people with obesity, including several monographs on antibiotics and analgesics.
- Don’t rush to crush – a long-standing, trusted guide to safely administering oral medicines to people with enteral feeding tubes or swallowing difficulties.
ANZCA members can access the TG platform via the ANZCA Library.
UK Study shows the need for investment in specialist perioperative services
A new UK-wide research study published in The Lancet Public Health has found high-risk patients account for nearly 80 per cent of post-surgery deaths. In response, the UK Centre for Perioperative Care has noted that the findings highlight the need for open conversations and more tailored care.

Congratulations to Dr Anna Steer who has been appointed as the new chair of the Australian and New Zealand Tripartite Anaesthetic Data Committee (ANZTADC).
Anna has been an invaluable and active member of our committee since 2021, contributing to that analysis of data on burns in the OT and drug administration errors. She is also is a strong advocate for the use of webAIRS local administrator functions within the University Hospital Geelong to support the review of incidents at morbidity and mortality meetings.
