Overview
What an incredible few days in Fremantle for the 2025 FPM Spring Meeting, where the theme - “Treating the whole pain patient” - brought together pain specialists, anaesthetists, GPs, allied health professionals and researchers from across Australia and New Zealand.
Over four days, delegates shared ideas, connected with colleagues and explored the biopsychosocial and multidisciplinary approaches shaping the future of pain care.
Acknowledgements
Firstly, congratulations to co-convenors Dr David Holthouse and Professor Michael Veltman for delivering a fantastic meeting program.
We also thank our speakers and session chairs for sharing their expertise, the healthcare industry sponsors and exhibitors, and the FPM and ANZCA staff who worked hard behind the scenes to ensure everything ran smoothly from the pre-meeting workshops through to the final session on Sunday.
Highlights
Inspiring sessions and speakers
Across the scientific program, speakers explored the full spectrum of pain medicine - from research and innovation to rehabilitation and multidisciplinary practice - reflecting the meeting’s focus on treating the whole pain patient.
Regional and National Committee Forum (RANC)
The meeting opened with the annual RANC forum, where representatives from across Australia and New Zealand gathered to discuss advocacy, workforce and future faculty priorities.
Collaboration across borders
We were delighted to host Kristy Cheung, CEO of the Hong Kong College of Anaesthetists (HKCA), and Dr Timmy Chan, Chair of the HKCA Board of Pain Medicine, to strengthen ties between our organisations and explore shared goals for education and research.
A night at the WA Maritime Museum
Saturday’s dinner at the Maritime Museum offered breathtaking harbour views and the chance to reconnect over good food and conversation - a wonderful celebration of the community that defines FPM.
Media coverage
FPM Dean Dr Dilip Kapur represented the faculty on ABC Perth Drive with Gary Adshead, highlighting the critical shortage of pain specialists across Western Australia and the impact this has on patients:
“Around one in five people live with chronic pain — that’s about 600,000 people — yet there are only 42 active pain specialists in the state of Western Australia. For 600,000 people, eight full-time public specialists… you can imagine there will be waiting lists.”
— Dr Dilip Kapur, FPM Dean
